Bold and Beautiful Designs by Kiki

Waking up to a headache on a Saturday morning is zero fun, but I committed to a morning event, so I told myself that it would go away after that handful of Ibuprofen. I eased out of bed and into the day just a bit more delicately than usual.

Since there was gelato on the schedule, I invited my son to join me. Our first stop was a women's boutique that featured a jewelry designer, originally from Hawai'i, now based in LA. I got a glimpse of her designs as we walked up to check in, but my headache was still blinding me, so I squinted my way out of the sunlight and into the shop.

After making an initial pass around the store, I spotted my favorite dog on Instagram and felt a my headache start to fade as I proceeded to gush all over little Chloe the Stylish Bisou.

Her owner, Heather was so sweet and had a super fun style. I even got her to let me pick Chloe up and she snapped a shot of us together. By the time the mini-fashion show started, the Ibuprofen had kicked in and Chloe had lifted my mood.

And then came Kiki.

Kiki Designs speaking at Wysh.jpg

Kiki was wearing a stunning piece of her own jewelry line, Kiki Designs, as were the other hosts of the event. I couldn't stop looking at them. They were bold and natural pieces that exuded warmth and a little something special. After hearing Kiki talk about her process in creating her pieces, I figured out what that something was... passion. She loves what she does and it shows in her work.

I mean... look at these gorgeous pieces:

Right???

Something she said resonated with me. It's something I always say and keep in mind when making big life decisions or even my plans for the day. "We only have a short time in this world." That short time is precious... like the stones that she works with. She talked about her creative process and life as one, from choosing the stones to the finishing touches of each piece, every thing comes from that thought... we only have a short time in this world.

I love that!

My son fell in love with her pieces, too. He's a big geology buff, so while Kiki wasn't talking to interested buyers, she was answering all of my son's questions with a smile. In all of our gift bags was a stone from Kiki with a little description of what it's supposed to bring to you. Mine was a citrine (brings happiness, energizes and invigorates, promotes warmth and comfort, and protects from negative energy). And because my son made an impression on her, Kiki gave him his own stone, a Ruby Zoisite. This stone is supposed to stimulate positive feelings and enhance the energetic and neural connections between the brain and the heart, something my brainy yet hot-headed son could use.

Citrine for me... Ruby Zoisite for my son.

Citrine for me... Ruby Zoisite for my son.

Awesome.

Kiki's designs are from the earth and are as bold and beautiful as nature herself. They've been seen on Gossip Girl, The Bachelorette, The Young & the Restless, and on celebrities such as Carrie Underwood, Maria Sharapova, Jess Walton, Courteney Cox Arquette, Tyra Banks & Allison Janney, and on Miss California on the cover of Fine Magazine.

I have my eye on one particular piece.

Oh, Mr. Joooooones... my birthday is comiiiiiing...

Then we all went over and had some gelato... including Chloe.

Boysenberry Bliss at Knott's Berry Farm

Many, many, many, MANY Springs ago, I got my grandma to give me a ride to a replica of Independence Hall where I filled out an application and went from station to station to talk to perfect strangers about how capable I was to join them. I was applying for a summer job at Knott's Berry Farm.

I got the job.

Turns out, it's not that hard to get a seasonal job at an amusement park. That didn't squash my excitement. I was going to work at one of my favorite places AND I was going to get to ride roller coasters any time I wanted to! Well... in between making change and putting toys back on shelves in the Camp Snoopy Toy Store.

During my time as an employee at Knott's Berry Farm, I learned a lot about Walter and Cordelia Knott and their little berry farm turned amusement park. And I learned to truly appreciate the Boysenberry, the berry that Mr. Knott grew commercially, especially on long night shifts when I spread some boysenberry preserves on hot biscuits. But as the summer wore on, I started feeling a sense of gratitude for that humble berry and The Knott Family. Had it not been for their little farm, this would just be another city block with a mini mall or something far less interesting than an amusement park on it.

Now it's Spring once again, and hundreds of kids are starting their fun new seasonal job. They're probably all excited to ride roller coasters on their breaks, and they'll definitely have a lot of fun and make all kinds of new friends, but by the end of the season, they'll also have a new favorite food:

The Boysenberry.

And along with the kids starting their new seasonal jobs, Spring brings another great Knott's tradition... The Boysenberry Festival. Yes, it's time to celebrate Knott’s delicious roots during the 16-day festival with a scrumptious lineup of Boysenberry food, plus the limited time return of the classic Bear-y Tales characters in a pie making kitchen, entertainment, and lots more!

The popular smokey and sweet Boysenberry Barbecue Sauce is back and will be playing a big part on this year's menu. Tossed with chicken wings, dripped on barbecue chicken sandwiches, or glazed on ribs, you'll be licking your fingers and lining up to buy a bottle or three.

Boysenberry Barbecue Chicken Sandwich on a Boysenberry roll with Boysenberry Ketchup and Boysenberry Relish. I was licking my plate after devouring this one.

And of course, there will be plenty of scrumptious sweets featuring the Boysenberry: Boysenberry Mousse, Boysenberry Cotton Candy, Boysenberry Flautas, BoysenberryPie, and the most anticipated sweet treat this Boysenberry season... the Fun Bun!

My favorites: Flautas and Fun Bun! The Boysenberry Flauta is Boysenberry preserves rolled in a flour tortilla and lightly fried. The Fun Bun (boysenberry ring layers in a warm bun, smothered in an ooey gooey Boysenberry topping, and then sprinkled with powdered sugar. The fun bun is deceptively huge. You'll want to share it with one or two other people.

After a full day of fun, you might be too tired to stop as you walk out to the parking lot to find your car. Do yourself a favor... stop anyway! You don't want to leave without popping in to the Country Store to pick up some Boysenberry Gummi Bears, Boysenberry Honey, Boysenberry Taffy, and Boysenberry Chocolate. And of course... don't forget that smokey Boysenberry Barbecue Sauce.

You WANT this sauce!

Catching Up with #KimmySchmidt

You know when you're in your final few weeks of pregnancy and all you want to do is stay home because your legs are too swollen and it's hard to carry your giant belly anywhere so you just hide out and wait for the alien to burst forth? And once the baby arrives, you're pretty much stuck at home for weeks... and then months... and then years?

You know what I'm talking about.

Then one day, after months of being locked up at home, you go out to lunch with your girlfriends and feel like the odd one out. Everyone's wearing cool new looks, talking about the movies up for an Oscar, all while munching on some trendy new food you can't pronounce... and you have no clue what is going on. After having four kids, I know that feeling all too well. Eventually, after every pregnancy, I'd get caught up with the rest of the world, but pretending to have a clue while catching up was always awkward at best. There was a lot of nodding and smiling and filing information away.

And of course, shopping for a new wardrobe.

Watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt reminds me so much of those awkward moments. Have you seen it? It's a hilarious new Netflix comedy series from the witty minds of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. Fans of 30 Rock and The Office will recognize the main characters: Ellie Kemper as Kimmy Schmidt, Jane Krakowski as her crazy Upper East Side employer, Jacqueline Voorhees, and Tituss Burgess as her quirky room mate, Titus who helps Kimmy catch up on life.

The show begins with Kimmy and three other women being rescued from an underground Apocalyptic shelter where they've been held by a cult leader for 15 years. Besides Titus, no one knows that Kimmy is one of the "Mole Women" and she tries her best to keep it a secret. But Kimmy's  cluelessness (she's stumped when asked to take a selfie with her phone and email it to her employer.) and outdated references ("I'm proficient in WordPerfect") keep giving her away. As daunting as catching up should be, Kimmy manages to stay ridiculously positive. Her fun and unbreakable spirit gets her through the most random situations that ring of The Office and 30 Rock, which make those of us still mourning the final episode of Parks & Rec very happy.

All 13 episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are now available on Netflix

Yeah, the months after having a baby can feel a lot like being one of those Mole Women, and going out into the light feels like everything is going to be great from that moment on. But the truth is, even after you come out of the shelter and you think you've caught up, you're still not caught up. There's always laundry and homework and breakfast and dinner and forms to fill out for the field trip you forgot about and phone calls from the school telling you that you're the only mom that forgot about early release day and your kid is crying on the curb.

And just when you get the hang of all of that other stuff, you look over at your kid as you drop them off a block away from school so they don't have to be embarrassed by your momness and you say one of those hip one liners from a YouTube video you just saw only to watch them roll their eyes at you.

Bring on the eye rolls... Honey Badger don't care! ;)
