Growing UP

Watching your kids get taller every day is a bittersweet thing. On the one side, you just want to keep them under your wing and protect them forever. On the other side, you know you have to help them grow up and learn to fly.

We can't keep them home forever (no matter how much they beg), so we do what we can to prepare them for the world, mentally, physically, and spiritually. We wake them up early and get them to bed not-too-late. We drive them to all of their practices. We make healthy lunches for them to take to school, crossing our fingers they don't swap it for junk food. We fill their heads with facts and faith hoping that they keep a healthy balance of both.

Every morning, my alarm goes off at 5:45 am, affectionately referred to as "oh dark thirty." I go across the hallway to my tween daughter's room and wake her up before heading to the kitchen to make her breakfast and help her pack a balanced lunch. Before her dad leaves the house at 6:30 am to take her to the school bus stop, I make sure she has her hair and teeth brushed, hand her her lunch, and kiss her goodbye. The bus leaves for school at 7:00 am on the dot. That's an early start for anyone.

She has a pretty rigorous academic schedule, as well as phys ed. On Mondays, she runs the mile, pushing herself to shave time off every week. After school, she works on her homework for 1-2 hours before dinner. She's a picky eater, so I have to make sure that she's taking in all the nutrients she needs at our evening meal. Before packing up for the next day, we try to make sure she does her chores. Some days, we give her a pass so that she can get her rest.

Most nights, we can get her into bed by 9:00 pm, but some nights, she has a harder time getting to sleep. I know how hard it is to be at your best when you didn't get enough sleep the night before. I worry about her getting enough rest at night to handle her days.

Jawbone UP Can Help With the Growing Up

Jawbone UP colors.jpg

A couple of weeks ago, I received a Jawbone UP device to check out. The Jawbone UP  tracks mood, fitness, and rest. From the Jawbone UP page: "UP™ is a system that takes a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. The wristband tracks your movement and sleep in the background. The app displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward." Like the tagline says, Know Yourself Better, Live Better.

I decided to have my daughter try out the Jawbone UP so that we could both track her health during this important time of growth. It's reassuring to me to know that she's getting a good night's rest and fueling her body. It's also important to me that she begin to monitor this for herself. The Jawbone UP is a flexible wristband-like device that easily syncs with an app on Apple or Android devices. There are all kinds of great features, including alarms for naps, reminders to get up and move if you've been idle too long, and the ability to track food and drinks by simply taking a picture or scanning a barcode!

WIth the Jawbone UP, we've been able to easily track my daughter's day-to-day activity, sleep patterns, and nutrition. We can talk about making changes to help her stay at her optimal health and ways that she can feel better inside and out.

She's growing up so fast... we can use all the extra help we can get on this journey.
