Braces Then... Invisalign Now

FYI: This is a sponsored post. I also got to keep the wig as an added bonus!

Woo hoo!!! I’m FINALLY getting my Invisalign treatment started!!!

When I tell people I'm getting Invisalign, they usually look at me and say, “But you have a great smile... why do you need braces?”

I like to think I have a great smile. I also have a pretty mean frown and a scary ass stink eye and you can practically hear me roll my eyes. I’m a very demonstrative person, what can I say?

But great smile or not, behind the front teeth that I show in pictures, the work on my bite issues is long overdue. Thankfully, this is not the 80's and I don't have to go around looking like this:

We've come a long way in orthodontic technology, baby!!

Back in the day...

When I was in high school in the 80's, my teeth were only mildly out of alignment. I had an overbite and the center teeth were skewed from each other (“jet”) by about 2mm, which was nowhere near enough to convince me that I should deal with the metal brackets, wires poking me in the mouth, the loss of enjoyment of eating apples, pop corn, peanut butter, and, not to mention possibly locking braces while making out with a boy. (That may or may not have been top of my list.)

My sister, however, did get braces.

The first thing her treatment required was the addition of a metal bar between her top teeth. It was my job to insert a small “key” into a notch in the center of the bar, slowly turning it once in the morning and another time at night. (I might have turned it a wee bit too quickly when she was annoying me.) Little by little, this bar widened the arch of her mouth. Eeeewwww. After that came the brackets and wires and the worst thing a teenage girl can ever be forced to wear... head gear.

So medieval!

My sister also played the flute in our high school marching band. Once she got braces, she had a hard time playing the instrument. My dad wasn't exactly happy about that after paying for the flute and all those lessons. Oh well.

Today, she and I both have shifting bites. It happens when you get older... I mean, wiser. My bite shifting has been more extreme because of some extractions on top of the overbite and jet. And then there's the grinding and TMJ that have popped up in the last couple of years...

As an adult, my sister went in to get aligners to get her teeth back into the shape they were in after years of torturous metal braces and wires. She was so happy that the braces we had then aren’t the only option for braces now. Between the old metal braces she wore back then and the practically invisible aligners Invisalign offers now, the choice was clear.

Get it? Clear? ;)

Invisalign is fast becoming the popular choice, and not just because they’re clear and less distracting than metal braces. Patients are asking for Invisalign aligners because they fit in their active lifestyles, they are more comfortable and practically invisible, and because they are technologically more advanced than traditional metal braces.

With Invisalign, there’s no need for goopy molds to gag on in order to get impressions because they use digital imaging to take dental impressions. Patients are comfortable and the orthodontist is able to receive the precise 3D imagery through the use of an iTero wand and scanner to create a teeth straightening treatment plan with Invisalign. Patients can even see the proposed progression of the treatment plan on a video of those 3D images!

Worldwide, there are more than 2 million Invisalign cases in treatment or completed. From very simple (like my sister getting her teeth back to perfect form) to the very challenging (me... the difficult child), Invisalign offers a full spectrum of clear straightening treatments for most types of orthodontic issues at about the same cost of traditional treatment.

During and after my orthodontic process, I’ll answer all the questions I can for you, and when I can’t, I’ll get a professional to answer. This week, I go in to get those 3D images of my grill. I’ll be sharing the video here as well as more information about how the orthodontist is going to plan for the holes in my bite. As excited as I am, I’m a little freaked about anyone seeing the before pictures, but it’s probably not any worse than showing up to an 80’s theme party at a public restaurant and being the only one that dressed up.
