Smells are the Flavor of Life

Having a cold is never fun. All that sneezing makes my nose stuffy. The worst part about that is not being able to smell all the marvelous smells in life. I can't smell flowers.

I can't smell garlic wafting through my kitchen.

I can't smell the salt water floating on the breeze down at the beach.

It's like I can't smell the flavors of life. It's perfectly miserable.

Vicks is always my go-to when I want to get back to normal. Every medicine cabinet in my house is stocked with all the Vicks goodies. VapoRub, NyQuil, DayQuil, Nature Fusion, and more. When my medicine cabinet is missing any of my arsenal in combatting colds, I get a little nervous. It's like running out of toilet paper. You don't want to get caught without it right when you need it.

Right now, Vicks is hosting a little contest where one of you could win a Medicine Cabinet Makeover. Each Vicks blogging ambassador gets to give one away. Here's what you need to do if you'd like to win a makeover from me:

  1. Head over to the Vicks VapoRub Facebook page.
  2. Leave a comment filling in the blank: "I know I'm getting better when I can finally smell ______________."
  3. Come back here and leave your answer in the comments.

That's it!

The Medicine Cabinet Makeover will include all VapoRub products (Vapo, Vapo Cream, Vapo Lemon Scented, BabyRub), NyQuil (liquid and caplets), DayQuil (liquid and caplets) and Nature Fusion (liquid and caplets), and a special Feel Better Friend get-well kit.

Good luck!

Who's Your Daddy?

For the last few weeks, I've had a secret that I couldn't share with you. It's about a mystery Daddy. One that we had to keep under wraps until we could officially tell you all about him. He used to live in San Diego. Ever since he moved, I've really missed him. Things haven't been the same, that's for sure. But he's been successful in his new role and his new family really loves him, so I try not to be too sad that he's not here any more.

But yesterday, a public announcement was made and now I can tell you all about the mystery Daddy.

Who is the Daddy?

Drew Brees.

Drew Brees, former quarterback of the San Diego Chargers, but y'all might know him better as quarterback of the N'awlins Saints (Who Dat?!!) is the first Daddy to work with Vicks VapoRub in 150 years! And who better to be the official dad for the familiar scent and feel of love and a restful night's sleep?

Here he is with his adorable son, Baylen:

Glad I finally got that off my chest.

Five Summer Uses for Vicks VapoRub

While I was up north in Monterey last week, I spent a little too much time in the cold, foggy air and ended up with a congested chest. By the time I got home from my trip, I had a deep, bronchial cough that sounded like I'd been smoking a stogey all my life. My relief came in the little green and blue jar that sits on my night stand.

Vicks VapoRub is my go-to for coughs and colds all Winter,  as well as the notoriously cold Spring days on the Northern California coast. I'll rub it on noses, feet, throats, and chests of my loved ones and myself. I'm sure many of you have done the same.

But did you know it has even more amazing uses beyond relief of the winter cold? Here are five ways that Vicks VapoRub helps you and your family during summer:

Headaches - Rising temperatures sometimes bring on mild headaches. Remember to stay hydrated. If you forget and end up with a headache, drink some water and rub Vicks VapoRub on your temple and forehead. The mentholated scent will release the pressure in your head and relieve your painful headache.

Splinters - Summer is made for hours of tree climbing. With all the swinging on branches come splinters. After you remove any splinters, use a dab of Vicks to prevent infection and speed up healing. Works for paper and other small cuts, too.

Mosquitoes - With summer come mosquitoes. Dabbing a bit of Vicks on your body and clothes will ward off these pesky little bugs. And if you do get bitten, rub a little Vicks on to relieve the itch.

Sore Muscles - If you spend too much time hunched over your garden or diving for volleyballs this summer, break out the Vicks and rub a bunch on your achy muscles. Then plan on spending the night alone.

Dry Home Air - Hot, dry air dries out the mucus membranes of the throat and nose, making them less effective barriers against infection. Not to mention, it's just plain uncomfortable to have a dry, scratchy throat. To make your home less arid in the summer, try using a humidifier with an aromatherapy compartment to place the Vicks VapoRub in.

If you come for a visit this summer, you'll be sure to smell the scents of charcoal burning, flowers blooming, oceans breezing, and Vicks VapoRub wafting all throughout the Sugar Shack.

Disclosure:  I am a part of Vicks VapoRub Blogger Brigade, a campaign put together to spread the word about Vicks products and their Facebook page.  (Have you "liked" them yet??) I chose to join “the brigade” because it’s a helpful campaign that I can stand behind.  I am being compensated for helping to spread the word about this perennial favorite that has been used for generations in my family.

PS: Don't you love big words like "perennial?"
